Programs supported by the
Friends of the Alameda Free Library
Funds raised by the Friends at our used book sales fund many special programs at the Library. In addition, members work to promote support for Library issues.
- Children's and teen programs, including the Summer Reading Program and Halloween Spooky Night. The Friends contribute financially to the Library's reading programs for children and teens. The money goes toward publicity, books, prizes, and other expenses for this program to encourage young people to read during their summer vacations. For some, this is the start of a lifetime love of reading.
- Author night programs and other special events. The Friends occasionally sponsor Author Night programs at the Library and other venues. These events typically feature authors reading from their books and discussing their writing process. Copies of the authors' books are available for purchase at the events.
- Special equipment over and above the Library's annual budget, such as the new microfilm readers recently installed in the new Library.
- Donate teen-oriented subscriptions to Juvenile Hall. The Friends help to promote literacy for teens in trouble in Alameda County by subscribing to popular magazines for the County's Juvenile Hall facility. Juvenile Hall administrators have reported back to us that the copies of Sports Illustrated, Motor Trend, and other titles are much appreciated by young people at the facility.
- Support the Alameda Reads literacy program.
- Serve as advocates for state and local funding for the Library and stimulate community awareness of all the Library services
